Here’s a link to the audio for one of the most hilarious interviews I’ve ever heard: a dad asking his two daughters (three and five) why the five-year old gave the younger sister the “worst haircut ever.”
Haircutting takes, like, a lot of concentration… that was really, really, really terrible, but everyone does that kind of stuff sometimes. It happens, like, once or twice or three times in every life. Or once. Or twice. Or once.
Listen to the whole interview (just a couple minutes and it will make you laugh out loud.) After many years teaching and parenting young children, what strikes me most is the incredible self-awareness of these little kids as they try to explain what possessed them to do such a classic sibling stunt. Be sure to listen for the preoccupation with various body parts (so age-appropriate!) and the priceless imitation of the mother’s reaction. And, in the end, the kids’ very mature understanding of the sequencing of events, their own motivations, and the concept of cause and effect.
